Curved Stairlifts

When considering the purchase of a curved stairlift, it is important to consider a number of  points:-

1. how wide is the staircase; and are the steps very steep?
2. how many turns are there on the stairs?
3. if the stairlift is to go up the external side, are there any impediments such as handrails, window sills, etc?
4. is there a conveniently located 13-amp socket to charge the batteries  and power the stairlift?
5. is the potential user tall or short; will they be able to operate the stairlift on their own?
6. is it safe to swivel the seat to get off on the top landing, or does the stairlift need to run on to a convenient on/off position on the landing?

A standard curved stairlift is mounted on the stairs (not on the wall) and can usually be installed on either side of the staircase; the user goes up and down sitting side-on to the stairs and the seat swivels to 90 degrees at the top, so that they can get off safely onto the landing.

There are a number of useful modifications available such as a powered swivel seat, manual or powered seat-to-footplate lifters, an automatic powered hinge (which is necessary if, for instance, there is a front door immediately opposite the foot of the stairs, or when the stairlift comes down into a passageway at a right angle to the stairs).

All the stairlifts come with remote controls which means that carers, etc can operate the lift if the user is unable to do so; they also have rapid response safety sensors on the footplate that stop the stairlift immediately if it meets with an obstruction on the stairs – once removed the stairlift can continue on its journey.
